NME®
The Neuro Matrix Entraining or New Musical Express or to "friends" just Enemy® stands for a musical career that is as diverse as it is strange...
NME® came forth out of the Dutch Electronica Techno-EBM band Voltage Control that spun quite some heads back in the early nineties with their mixture of aggressive yet intelligent music. Music, as created by Voltage Control, that stood on the forefront of a whole new paradigm within the electronic dance music scene.
Known for their unconventional approach to live performances -The stage situated at the center in every venue; everything played live from samplers and synthesizers with the sound coming at the audience from 4 directions at once, Voltage Control collaborated with members of the European Dance Development Center from the School of Arts in Arnhem Holland to complement their musical stylings with live experimental dance performances. Still not satisfied, Voltage Control also bombarded the audience with an abundance of live and static visuals using slide projection and live video streams. A Voltage Control performance was quite an experience!
After their Demo first aired on the Dutch national VPRO radiostation, their tracks played by Luckx Jansen en Gerard J. Walhof, Voltage control was signed by the famous Belgian underground Label Antler and released 2 maxi singles and a full length CD. Also two of their tracks were part of the compilation albums: "Another World: Electronic body music" Part One and Two on which they appeared together with many other well-known EBM and Electronic underground bands of that time. These included: Noise Unit, The Klinik, Consolidated, A split Second, Dive and In Sotto Voce just to name a few...
After Voltage Control split up, N.M.E.® ventured into the sounds of Acid. Exploring the "holy" Roland TB 303, and creating a more basic and pleasant Acid sound. Not much interested in the harsh and "over the top" distorted sounds of Gabber and other harder styles of the day,
N.M.E.® wanted to create something more esthetic on the Acid front. Still acid with an edge, in a style of which the phrase "Let the -motha fucker- SPEAK!" captures the essence. Armed only with a TB 303, a TR 606 and a MC 202 many tracks were created, resulting in two more releases on the small Dutch independent 303 label: See-Saw.
During this period also 2 other releases saw the light on the Dutch independent Halley Records label. This was more in the style of german dark trance that gained most of its' momentum in the mid 90's. Also on Halley records, 3 tracks in total appeared on Compilation CD's: Cyber Glow vol. 1 and 2. Tracks that were part German style Dark-Trance and Acid.
During his career NME® worked together with bands and people that also earned their stripes in the underground music scene. Ranging from bands and people like Kurt Dahlke and frank Fenster Macher, founding members of Der Plan/the Attatak studio and label in Düsseldorf, to Peter van Vliet who was a founding member of the Dutch shocker wave band Mekanik Commando. Also a brief encounter with the british Sample collective Greater than One, resulted in a one track collaboration.
Nowadays N.M.E.® is moving more and more towards Sound-scape productions and dark ambient styles of music. Coming together and shaping it's current form within the new Art collective Glax-Clock...
